Swimming can be incredibly powerful for recovery, rehabilitation and rebuilding movement But sometimes, getting better in the water means looking beyond the water.
That’s where Successful Swimming and Ryan McGrath "The Hybrid Physiotherapist" come together in our proven
ACCESS, REBUILD, RETURN programme.
Together, we look at the whole picture: what is limiting your movement, how it affects your swimming, and what we can do about it.
We’ve already seen the impact of this approach.
We’ve helped an aspiring athlete who struggled to swim 15m efficiently due to severe physical restriction, progress to representing Singapore at the Asian Games, and helped post-breast-cancer patients following double mastectomies return to swimming freestyle within weeks.
This isn't about following a standard rehabilitation plan. It’s about understanding the swimmer in front of us, working together to address what’s holding them back, and helping them move better, swim better and return to the water with confidence.
Understand the swimmer in front of us.
Every body is different. Every swimmer has different limitations, history and goals. Ryan and Successful Swimming work together to assess where you are physically and in the water, identifying the restrictions, weaknesses, movement patterns or other physical factors that may be affecting your swimming. We don't just ask, “How is your stroke?” We ask, “What is your body currently capable of doing, and what is stopping it from doing more?” This gives us a clear picture of where you're starting and what needs to change.
This is where Ryan does his thing.
Using targeted physiotherapy and movement work, Ryan addresses the physical limitations identified during your assessment, while Successful Swimming builds and adapts your swimming program around that work. We communicate. We adjust. We work together. Your swimming isn't treated separately from your rehabilitation. Instead, your pool program evolves alongside the work being done on land, allowing you to safely develop movement, strength, coordination and confidence without simply pushing through the same limitations that brought you here in the first place.
Return to the water with more freedom, not more fear.
The goal isn't simply to get you back in the pool. It's to help you return better than you entered it. As your movement improves, your swimming evolves with it. You begin to move with greater freedom, confidence and control, while developing a stronger understanding of what your body can do. Whether you're returning after surgery, injury or illness, working around long-standing physical restrictions, or simply trying to unlock a level of swimming that your body hasn't previously allowed you to reach, we want you to leave this program feeling more capable in the water than when you started. Access the problem. Rebuild the body. Return to swimming.
